San Francisco: Google has introduced an “experimental” picture-in-picture (PiP) feature for its iOS YouTube app, which enables premium subscribers to watch video content while using other apps.
The PiP mode is limited to YouTube Premium customers for the time being and is considered an experimental feature, which means it has to be activated manually before use.
When this feature is enabled, users can shrink YouTube’s viewing window into a “mini-player” that sits on top of other apps, AppleInsider reports.
To use PiP, subscribers must first visit YouTube.com/new while signed in to their Google account and navigate to the “Picture-in-Picture on iOS” experiment. Selecting “Try it out” activates the option for this account.
Next, when you open the YouTube app on iPhone and play a video, users can swipe up or press the home button to close the app and show a mini player. The video continues to play in the small PiP window.
Locking the screen pauses the video, although the content can continue through the lock screen controls, YouTube said.
YouTube announced that it would introduce a PiP mode for US subscribers to its premium service in July.
