Elon Musk linked another revelation that he had sold more shares in Tesla Inc. with a joke tweet about quitting his jobs.
According to regulatory filings Thursday, Tesla’s CEO dumped an additional $ 963 million in stock to pay taxes on the exercise of an additional 2.2 million options. He’s now sold approximately $ 11.8 billion worth of shares in five weeks.
The richest man in the world then quipped a few hours after the records were published that he had found a new calling.
“I’m considering quitting my jobs and becoming a full-time influencer,” wrote Musk, asking his nearly 66 million followers what they thought of the idea. He followed that up with several laughing emoji responses.

Shareholders and regulators haven’t always appreciated the humor in Musk’s Twitter outbursts. Tesla shares plummeted after jokingly posted on April Fools’ Day in 2018 that the company had gone bankrupt. Later that year he was sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission for tweeting about the privatization of Tesla at a price significant in marijuana culture that he thought would amuse his girlfriend at the time.
Tesla fell 2.1% to $ 982.53 shortly after starting regular trading on Friday. The stock is down about 20% from its November 4 high as Musk dumped shares. He tweeted last month that he would be sticking to a poll he conducted to sell 10% of his stake in the automaker. Since then, he has sold more than 11 million shares.
Musk has now managed about two-thirds of the way to reduce 10% of his direct stock ownership. If the threshold he named includes exercisable options, he would have to get rid of around 6 million more shares.
The CEO of Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is the richest person in the world with $ 266 billion in net worth, up $ 110 billion this year according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
