New Delhi: Last year WhatsApp introduced disappearing messages that allow users to set a duration for texts. Unless you have screenshots or anything like that, these messages will go away when the timer runs out without leaving a copy anywhere.

As WhatsApp puts it, “the freedom to be honest and vulnerable while talking to someone who knows the discussion is nowhere recorded and saved forever” is the core premise behind message disappearing.

“The decision as to how long a message lasts should be in your hands,” claims the company, citing the introduction of disappearing messages and the “view once” option for photos and videos on the platform as examples.

With messages disappearing by default and varying durations, WhatsApp has added another level of customization to messages so that users can choose how long their messages should “linger”.

WhatsApp users on Android and iOS now have the option to turn on message disappearance by default, which makes one-on-one conversations with another person disappear after the specified time. This option is also available for group chats. Once activated, disappearing messages only apply to messages sent after that date and do not affect previous texts.

When WhatsApp first started rolling out disappearing messages, the only deadline option was seven days. There are now two additional options: 24 hours and 90 days.

If you activate this option, a message is displayed in the conversation informing the participants of the decision made about the further course of the communication. This can easily be switched on and off in the settings.

Points on disappearing messages from WhatsApp

– If the message disappearing feature is activated for a chat, it only affects subsequent conversations. Chats from the past are not affected.

– All users in a group chat have the option to enable disappearing messages, but the administrator can adjust the group settings to only allow administrators.

– If someone doesn’t review messages within 24 hours, seven days, or 90 days, the disappeared messages are removed from the conversation as planned. It is possible for it to be previewed in the notifications until the app is accessed.

If you reply to a missing message, the quoted content can remain in the conversation after the timer expires.

– If a user backs up before a message disappears, the backup will contain the message that has disappeared. However, if the user restores from a backup, it will be destroyed.

– Before a message disappears, it is possible to forward it to another person, take a screenshot or copy the information.
