Antonio Guterres donates $ 500,000 to the UN Refugee Agency.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday he would donate the US $ 500,000 prize he received after accepting the Zayed Prize for Human Fraternity to the United Nations Refugee Agency.
On Wednesday, Guterres was honored with the 2021 Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, which recognizes work promoting human progress and includes a $ 1 million prize. Together with the UN chief, the prize was awarded to the Moroccan-French activist Latifa Ibn Ziaten.
“I decided to donate the prize money – $ 500,000 – to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees [UN Refugee Agency] to support its indispensable efforts to protect the most vulnerable members of the human family – the displaced, “Guterres said in a statement.
Guterres said he decided to donate the prize money to the UN Refugee Agency because he wanted to promote common humanity in a series of ongoing global crises.
“Given the Covid-19 pandemic, an economic crisis, a climate emergency and threats to peace, unity and solidarity are more important than ever,” said Guterres.
