New Delhi: When it comes to the UI redesign, one of the most striking elements of Android 12 is the Dynamic Themes auto-theming feature. This feature selects colors from the background and applies them to the system user interface and supported apps. According to Mishaal Rahman of XDA Developers, the feature is called “monet” and is only available to Pixel users. Dynamic themes should also be available for other Android smartphones.

That’s fascinating. The source code for Monet (Android 12’s wallpaper-based theme system) will be released along with Android 12L, but based on this code update for the Material Components library, it appears that a number of OEMs are already integrating dynamic color support.

He goes on to say that he discovered a section of Google’s material component library called “Add list of supported manufacturers with dynamic colors”. According to the code, the feature will be available on phones from OPPO, Realme, OnePlus, vivo, Xiaomi, Motorola, itel, Tecno Mobile, Infinix, HMD Global, Sharp, Sony, TCL, Lenovo, Google and Roboelectric.

Remarkably, Samsung was missing from the list. According to the source, dynamic color functionality is included in Samsung’s One UI 4 Betas, which are based on Android 12. More smartphone manufacturers are to be added to the list in the near future. It is also plausible that Samsung does not use the Google operating system. In addition, developers occasionally change the auto-theming algorithm for their devices so that the same wallpaper will produce different results on two different devices.

For the uninitiated, Google has just unveiled Android 12L, a reissue of the Android operating system for tablets and large-screen devices such as foldable devices. Google is clearly pushing for “large” screen smartphones by adding an “L” to Android 12. Google has released the Android 12L Developer Preview, which allows select users to test out the new big screen features and tweak the available apps. Google offers improved UI performance on large screens with Android 12L for warnings, quick settings, lock screen, overview, home screen and more. Android 12L also optimizes the system apps.

Google has confirmed that the Lenovo P12 Pro will be the first phone to ship with Android 12L. It will be available for Android 12 tablets early next year.
