The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and URA announced on September 30th that the leases in Turf City would be extended to December 31, 2023.

This marks the final lease extension before the land is prepared for future residential developments. While the land has been for residential use since 1998, SLA has leased the land for residential and recreational use.

Background of the Turf City

The site was home to the Singapore Turf Club from 1933 to 1999 when it moved to Kranji. According to the SLA, the property has been earmarked for future residential use since the 1998 master plan after the relocation of the Turf Club was announced in 1993.

According to the Straits Times, the site covers 140 hectares, or about the size of 200 soccer fields.

Since then, SLA has taken over the space for “temporary use” and manages the site, including letting it for lifestyle and leisure use.

It currently hosts several retail, F&B, sports and recreational facilities, childcare and vehicle displays. This includes The Tribüne shopping center. The place is also known for various sports activities such as rugby, cricket and horse riding.

The original lease should expire on December 31, 2020. After tenants requested an 18 month extension, SLA granted the extension in 2019.

Fast forward to 2021, SLA has announced that there will be a final 18-month extension for tenants so they can make transition plans. At the same time, development plans for the location are being examined.
