New Delhi: With the latest version of Telegram’s iOS, Android and desktop apps, users of the encrypted messaging app Telegram can turn their group voice chats into video conferencing.

Users have the option to pin someone’s video feed to the screen so they can stay the center of attention even when new participants join the call.

Unsurprisingly, when users need to give a presentation or want to show something, users can share their screen. Users have the ability to share both their camera feed and their screen at the same time, Engadget reported.

With this release, group video calls are limited to the first 30 people who join a voice chat, but that number will “soon” increase, according to Telegram, as live events and other new features are added to voice chats.

Users can participate in group video calls on their phones, tablets and computers.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov had previously made the announcement via a message on his official Telegram channel in which he wrote: “We will add a video dimension to our voice chats in May, making Telegram a powerful platform for group video calling becomes”.

An April 2020 blog post on the 400 million user surplus wrote that global lockdown “highlighted the need for a trusted video communication tool” – and synchronized video calls in 2020 “similar to messaging in 2013”.

However, it also emphasized the importance of security for group video calls – and that may be the reason for the delay.

The company said it had 400 million monthly active users in April 2020, up from 200 million in 2018.
