The global cybersecurity challenge requires a multi-faceted solution in which technology companies play a bigger role. At the same time, it is important to involve a larger pool of security experts and apply best practices, said Microsoft President Brad Smith on Tuesday evening at the Raisina Dialogue, India’s prime ministers conference on geopolitics and geoeconomics.

He noted that recent incidents, such as the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica event, were “turning points” that had an impact on how people generally think about technology.

“It (cybersecurity) is an extremely important issue. I think the recent spate of cybersecurity attacks has underscored this even more. I think the solution has to be diverse. (As a technology company) we need to ask how we can change our practices, how we can make our software and services more secure, and what more can we do to help customers around the world, “he said.

Running solutions in the cloud is more secure than running on local servers because it’s easier to keep track of the data and attacks, and the upgrades can be made, he said.

Smith said national consultations are taking place with people asking about the obligations tech companies running social media websites should have in relation to removing illegal content.

He also noted that the “changing relationship” between China and the US, and China and other countries, is one of the most significant geopolitical developments of the decade.

“We are definitely seeing an impact on hardware supply chains for a lot of companies … moving hardware manufacturing out of China. It’s been going on for 18 months, although it’s not always publicly discussed by companies, “he said.

According to Smith, hardware manufacturing capacity is shifting to Vietnam, South Korea, or other parts of South Asia. “In the long term, this creates potential new opportunities for India and others to make themselves a hardware manufacturing location,” he said.
