Today is the day – Tata Motors will reveal almost everything about its newest SUV, the Tata Punch. Bookings for the punch open today as Tata prepares to launch its smallest SUV to date in the second half of October.
Presented at the Auto Expo 2020 as a near-series H2X concept, the Punch is the second Tata model after the Altroz that is based on the company’s new ALFA architecture. The Punch will be Tata Motors’ cheapest SUV and will fit into the company’s SUV range below the Nexon.
The Tata Punch transmits the upright posture, the beefy front and the muscular wheel arches of the H2X concept – elements that are sure to attract SUV enthusiasts. A couple of teasers shared online in the past few days also confirm that the Punch maintains some of the H2X concept’s styling cues, including its funky taillights.
Just like the outside, the Tata Punch reflects the H2X concept inside and leaves out some of the concept car elements. The Punch’s dashboard has an upright, blocky look with a two-tone theme in gray and ivory. Many elements inside the Punch were taken over from the Altroz, including the semi-digital instrument cluster, the steering wheel and the climate control switches. The floating 7.0-inch Harman touchscreen infotainment system is also borrowed from the Altroz.
While the Tata Punch will likely only be offered as a gasoline engine, it will likely be both the naturally aspirated 1.2-liter (as seen in the Tiago, Tigor, and Altroz) and turbo engine (as in the Altroz). Transmission options for the Tata HBX will likely include a five-speed manual and an automated manual transmission. There won’t be a diesel option, but Tata is set to develop an all-electric version of the Punch in the future.
For now, the Tata Punch is unlikely to have any direct competitors, and the closest models to it are the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the long-forgotten Mahindra KUV100. However, Hyundai is developing its own mini-SUV (code name AX1) that is slated to arrive in India next year. Expect Tata Punch’s prices to be in the range of Rs 5 – 7.5 lakh (ex-showroom).
