(NEXSTAR) – When you have kids, things just seem to pile up. There are toys in every box, closet and corner of the floor. As the children grow up, their old toys are thrown aside for new things.

You might be tempted to collect everything in a trash bag and take it out of the house before you get to the 1,000. Step on a Lego brick. But before you clear the mess, take stock of what you have. Some toys may have value in the collectors’ market in the future.

How can you tell which of those toys strewn around the nursery have a chance of growing up? We asked Jordan Hembrough, toy expert and host of the Toy Hunter show, what to look out for.

His top tip? Look for toys that come with a master license, like a comic book or TV show. “When you open your toy box in the nursery, look for a Batman toy or a ‘Star Trek’ toy,” said Hembrough, giving examples of franchises that have had remarkable endurance.

“Squid Game” will return for Season 2, says the creator

As these series release new movies and spin-offs for the next generation, today’s toys can be valuable relics. When your grandchildren see Part 29 of Star Wars, a 2015 Rey action figure might conjure up just enough nostalgia to have resale value.

“In order for a toy to be collectable and to have value on the secondary market, there has to be an emotional bond with it. It conjures up a memory, ”said Hembrough.

Everything you have in the original box is an added bonus; that will always sell more than collectibles down the line. Hembrough said one of his customers recently received $ 10,000 for a box of about 50 unopened Masters of the Universe action figures that he sat around his house. They were all packed in perfect condition.

As a rule, things that are mass-produced will continue to be of less value in the future. And just because a toy was in short supply when purchased doesn’t mean it will be a hot commodity forever.

“It could be hot for a season like those Elsa singing dolls, they were the hottest Christmas because no one could find them, but after all, they can be found in stores all over the place,” said Hembrough.

Check out your attic: these old toys can be worth a lot of money

Disney, Hasbro, and Mattel are pumping out toys for mass consumption, Hembrough said, so finding things from other manufacturers could lead to better investments.

Of course, limited edition toys (only a few hundred of which have been produced) are most likely to sell for a pretty penny later. But if you’ve lined up or looted for one of these limited edition toys, we hope it isn’t on the floor of your child’s closet.
