A collective of people and businesses concerned about the environment will host a snorkeling event in Manly Cove on Saturday to collect straws.
Do you fancy a straw cup?
Members of Sustainable Organizations of Manly – a collective of people and companies that care about the environment – will host a snorkel in Manly Cove on Saturday to collect straws.
Organizer Harriet Spark, 26, said she had collected 1037 straws from the ocean in the six weeks since Operation Straw began.
“I’m a diving instructor and I’ve spent a lot of time underwater,” she said.
“We kept coming out with hundreds of straws and people reacted with shock.
“I thought if we had data, people could see how much is going into the ocean.”
The group identifies where the straws came from and returns them to local stores to change their business practice.
The group will meet near the Manly Aquarium and will depart around 9am today.
Snorkels can be rented at the Manly Dive Center.
