At the beginning of the coming semester, we wanted to remind you of a few important points to ensure a seamless teaching experience. As you may recall from the Fall 2020 semester, HyFlex classes are held in two types of classrooms: Teams HyFlex and HyFlex. In all classrooms, the in-room instructor and students, both in the classroom and remotely, participate in a remote meeting for a consistent classroom experience.

Instructors have several university-supported technologies to support remote meetings. Microsoft teams or Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. Faculty is encouraged to post on their Blackboard courses and / or email students to tell them what technology they are using to facilitate HyFlex sessions and how they should access it.

If you need to confirm what type of classroom you have been assigned, please contact Classroom Directory.

If you teach in a Team HyFlex room
In a Teams Hyflex room, you start the virtual class reunion via the team control panel in the room.

The Department of Information Technology will automatically schedule all classes assigned to a Team HyFlex room as it did in Fall 2020. You do NOT need to create the team calendar entries for classes held in those classrooms. This is necessary for the class session to appear in the Team Panel in your assigned classroom, on your team calendar, and on your students’ team calendar.

You start your class from the team panel in the assigned classroom.

  • When a student adds your course, they will be added to the course team and the sessions will automatically be added to their team calendar.
  • If a student abandons your course, they will be completely removed from the course team.
  • If your room assignment is changed to a Hyflex or HyFlex Temporary Classroom, please see the Teaching in a HyFlex or Temporary Classroom section below.
  • If you are using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra for synchronous sessions in a Team HyFlex room, follow these instructions to control the room. You plan your Collaborate sessions as usual in Blackboard.

If you are teaching in a HyFlex or temporary classroom
In a Hyflex or temporary classroom, you start the virtual class reunion via your team calendar on your laptop.

Unlike Teams HyFlex Classrooms, you need to schedule a recurring meeting invitation in Teams for the assigned dates and times of the course. This way, the students can access the synchronous sessions through their team calendar.

  • When a student adds your course, they are automatically added to the course team.
  • If a student abandons your course, they will be completely removed from the course team.
  • When using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra for synchronous sessions in a HyFlex or HyFlex temporary classroom, the process of connecting to the room camera is the same as for faculties using teams. You plan your Collaborate sessions as usual in Blackboard.

The TLT Center is at your disposal while you are preparing for the upcoming semester. Each department is assigned an Instructional Designer who can help develop new strategies to make courses more engaging, facilitate group work, discussion or alternative assessment methods.

The TLT Center has also planned an extensive catalog of workshops and training opportunities that cover best practices and technologies used to improve remote learning and the HyFlex model.
