The lotus set

Sonia G The Lotus Set Summer 2021 Brush Set ($ 215.00) is a new limited edition set that features a different colored ferrule and handle compared to the brand’s permanent brushes. The set contains six brushes; three for the face and three for the eyes. Three of the brushes are very similar to the existing core brushes (one is exactly the same).

I would consider this a half review as there are three brushes that are similar to previous releases so I have more knowledge of this but there are three that are new to the set so these may be more like first impressions. The quality of Sonia G. was so high that I feel comfortable making first impressions as I haven’t had any problems with brushes that deteriorate over time and I usually find that I get a brush over time love more than go the other way. I’ve replaced most of my favorite products with Sonia G. Brushes over the years.

Lotus base

Lotus base is a new, fan-shaped brush with a clamped ferrule that gives the brush in the middle (where the ferrule comes up) a firmer, denser feel and makes the edges more flexible. It features a mix of Sokoho goat, PBT and PTT synthetic bristles and has a hair length of 18mm and a total length of 163mm. This brush is new and exclusive (at least currently) in the set.

According to the brand, it’s designed to be applied to foundation. The mixture of natural and synthetic bristles gives the brush more grip and mobility, while at the same time being more durable and absorbing less liquids and creams with which it is used. The brush head felt smooth on my skin, regardless of whether I used it more on the edge in a dabbing motion or more in a stroking motion, using the sides and edges. It was well formed and placed without any spillage.

I’m not sure if this is the brush I would reach for to apply my foundation as I tend to prefer something with a more rounded shape that you can tap and buff with. I could imagine using this more for shaping or highlighting with liquid or off-white products. The curved nature, but still a bit wide on the edge, made it especially easy to maneuver around my nose, upper lip, between the browbones, and around the browbones, but I feel like I have to use it a few dozen times, to know if it is so will be a go-to for foundation.

Lotus cheek

Lotus cheek is a small to medium-sized cheek brush that is moderately dense and has slightly tapered, feather-like bristles that reach to the top of the brush head. It features Saikoho goat bristles and has a hair length of 30mm and a total length of 165mm. This brush is an unstained version of the Cheek Pro, although it is supposed to be “airier”.

This changes its shape and is noticeably exhibited after washing what was intended and stated by the brand. When working with the Cheek Pro, it can be easier to over-apply the product in a certain area, but I like working with higher shimmer products like highlighter over matte or powdery cheek colors like bronzers or blushes. I found the same thing with the Lotus Cheek, but the Lotus Cheek was more forgiving as it was definitely not that close to the edge, but still slightly more suitable for those with a lighter hand or who have cleaner products to begin with.

The quality of the bristles was what I would expect from the brand; regardless of direction or technique, they were good, soft, and comfortably positioned on the skin.

Lotus detail

Lotus detail is a small, angled cheek brush with a mixture of colored and undyed Saikoho goat and has a hair length of 28 mm and a total length of 173 mm. It’s new (and exclusive at this point, at least) to the set.

It’s a feather-lighter, incredibly soft, and silky-smooth brush head that is less dense to the touch than most of the brushes I have with a similar shape. It has a fluffier edge which gives a more diffuse effect the first time the product is applied, and that fluffiness also helps to spread out and diffuse for a blended edge. It worked well for powder cheek paints, although I found it most useful for getting more buildable coverage from more intense highlighters, contouring / sculpting, and highlighting.

Lotus builder

Lotus builder is a medium shader brush and is said to be similar to Builder Three in the brand’s permanent range, but with uncolored bristles. It has Saikoho bristles and has a hair length of 10 mm and a total length of 150 m.

I actually felt this was a bit more compact and not as thick / dense as the Builder Three. The edge became fluffier after a few washes than on the Builder Three, so the products diffused a touch more when they were see-through. The shape is great for applying and packing the product on the lid or for using the edge of the lash line to apply or blend products. I use Builder Three regularly (I have several of these) and will definitely add it to my rotation.

Lotus worker

Lotus worker is a small to medium-sized eye brush with a rounded edge and a moderately dense handle. It has a mixture of Saikoho bristles and has a hair length of 15 mm and a total length of 155 mm. This is the same as for worker 2 in the permanent area.

I regularly use the brand’s Worker brushes for my eyeshadow application and I usually reach for them for a more intense work on the internal tear ducts or browbones. I’ll also be using them to diffuse the edges of wrinkle paints and soften them when I need additional buffing. You can read my full review here as this brush was the same as the original release.

Lotus Soft Definer

Lotus Soft Definer is a very small wrinkle brush with a soft rounded edge that opened and flared slightly after the first wash (which was intended). It features dyed Saikoho goat bristles and has a hair length of 12 mm and an overall length of 152 mm. This is a new and (at least currently) exclusive brush in the set.

From the set, this was the one brush that stood out the most. The brand described it as a “cross between a pencil brush and a wrinkle brush,” just as I would describe it. The length is more like a small wrinkle brush, but the precision and strength is more like a pencil brush. This is great for adding more defined color placement to the crease or for adding more intensity to the crease. I often use a smaller wrinkle brush to apply the wrinkle colors initially and fade them out slightly, especially in the deepest part of my crease, then use a larger, fluffier brush to really diffuse and fade out the edge.

It’s a bit shorter, more compact and stronger with less flexibility / fluffiness compared to the Mini Booster, which I use a lot and have bought several. Between the two, the Mini Booster is more versatile, but I assume that I’ll use the Soft Definer often.
