Have you bought a smartwatch to get the most out of your exercise program?

Or do you exercise because your smartwatch accuses you of doing it?

This chicken and egg dilemma has caused the smartwatch market to explode with options for every buyer. There is a smartwatch for every wrist, for every fitness enthusiast, for every multitasker and above all for every pocket.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that the Apple Watch is ruling the market as a favorite. As someone who has been addicted to my Apple Watch for years to track my fitness, heart health, and meet my daily exercise goals, I’ve been resistant to change.

Because of this, I was a little cautious about trying out the new Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, the company’s newest smartwatch that comes with all the bells and whistles.

Specifications:
  • Price: starts at Rs 23,999
  • Comes with accelerometer, barometer, gyro sensor
  • Swimming, cycling, golf, hiking modes

Because of this, I think the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 could inspire loyalists to switch.

LOOKS

The Galaxy Watch 4 comes with a classic round dial and looks more like a fitness tracker than a watch and that’s nothing to complain about. I know people who have a problem with smartwatches being too “bulky”, too “thin” or too “small” to see their training performance. The Watch 4 is none of that. You get a physical bezel that is surprisingly sturdy, two side buttons, and an overall durable yet chic-looking smartwatch.

I have to say that I’m not a fan of the sporty yet somewhat uncomfortable suspender when it comes to aesthetics, but I think it’s the perfect rudimentary harness for sweaty workouts

DIVERSE PROPERTIES ON THE SCREEN

I’ve always been a fan of tidy spaces, and a clean screen is what I love on my phone, tablet, and now even my smartwatch. The 40 mm area is completely sufficient, especially with its crystal clear display. You can set up a watch face with all of your notifications, but that can drain your battery faster.

SOFTWARE: IS IT THE “REAL TEAM PLAYER”?

Samsung has called the operating system of the Galaxy Watch 4 a “real team player” and that is because it is the first smartwatch with Wear OS powered by Samsung. This means that the power of Google and Samsung are coming together to make the user interface cleaner, clearer and more intuitive. And it works fine.

Pair the smartwatch with the Galaxy Wearable app and apps play seamlessly from music to health to fitness. Samsung was clever here. The Tizen OS hangover continues and Samsung wearable loyalists will jump on it. And now with Wear OS, a new market for smartwatch users will lean on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

You can customize the user interface however you want and choose from multiple watch faces from analog to digital. And if you look at your wrist more than your phone, you don’t have to worry about missing an important notification.

WILL THIS WATCH MOVE YOU?

Let’s get back to my original question: do you buy a watch to get fit or are you already a fitness enthusiast? Because no technology can make you fit on its own. However, the Galaxy Watch 4 has a lot to offer. You can choose from swimming, biking, running, golf, hiking, and much more.

A feature worth mentioning is the new Samsung BioActive Sensor, which records your body composition in real time to help you achieve your health goals. Like all health metrics, take this with a pinch of salt. Think of this as a roadmap for your fitness goals.

There are of course all of these metrics and sensors for sleep tracking, heart rate tracking, and even SPO2 tracking, which has become a new favorite during the pandemic.

The ECG function, made famous by the Apple Watch, which Samsung will hopefully bring to India soon, also made headlines. Let me be honest though, I doubt anyone would rely on a smartwatch for their EKG measurements. I will say it is a great way to keep track of your heart health.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a great fitness tracker and performs well during high-intensity workouts.

BATTERY LIFE

As with all smartwatches, my only criticism remains the battery life. Like the Apple Watch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 only lasted about a day during my intensive use. Tech giants, at this price point, don’t we all deserve a better battery?

THE Undisputed KING OF ANDROID SMARTWATCHES?

What gives the Galaxy Watch 4 an edge is the partnership between Samsung and Google that eliminates all of the previous software problems that users have faced with Samsung wearables. Apps work smoothly, notifications appear quickly, and the sporty watch feels great and light on the wrist.

I will rightly call for improvements to the battery! At that price, we need at least two days of battery life from all tech giants.

For fitness enthusiasts and anyone embarking on a new fitness journey in the New Year, I would call this the best Android smartwatch out there right now.

Apple, do you hear?

So if you’re looking for the perfect gift for friends or family who need an extra boost to help them meet their fitness goals, go for the Galaxy Watch 4. Either this or a gym membership, I say!
