However, plans to designate a cycle and footpath as the “Everard Way” were discarded after research showed that his great-grandfather – the merchant banker Sir Francis Baring – established the family fortune of slaves.
Everard – whose sister Margaret was Princess Diana’s great-grandmother – risked his life helping North Africans before leading a brigade in World War I.
He was part of the Nile expedition to evacuate Egyptians from Sudan and was mentioned twice in dispatches. Everard died in 1932 at the age of 66.
He was to be honored in Kingston upon Thames in southwest London – his old hometown.
