(Reuters) – Social media app Parler has suspended federal lawsuits against Amazon.com Inc for discontinuing its web hosting services and filed a separate lawsuit against the company and its web services unit in a Washington court late Tuesday.
Parler’s new lawsuit, first reported by NPR, accused Amazon of defamation and breach of contract.
Parler, an app popular with American legal users, went back online last month after it got dark in January when many service providers withdrew support, accusing them of violent content related to the Aug. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Not having monitored January. the legislative seat of the nation, by supporters of then-President Donald Trump.
Parler sued Amazon, accusing it of making an illegal, politically motivated decision to shut it down in favor of Twitter Inc. However, a US judge denied his request that Amazon restore services to the platform later in January.
A month later, Parler restarted its services online, saying the new platform was built on “sustainable, independent technology”. SkySilk, a Los Angeles-based company, announced that it will provide Parler with a private cloud infrastructure.
A spokesman for Amazon Web Services said the lawsuit claims were unfounded. Parler did not respond to requests for comment.
According to Amazon, Parler has ignored repeated warnings to effectively mitigate the growth of violent content on its website, including calls for the assassination of prominent Democratic politicians, business leaders and media representatives.
However, Parler said there was a lack of evidence that it played a role in sparking the pro-Trump riots in the U.S. Capitol, arguing that it was unfair for millions of law-abiding Americans to be deprived of freedom of expression.
Google has also removed the application from the Play Store and Apple from the App Store.
