More radio waves will be reserved for 5G cellular technology as the Canadian government says it will auction a repurposed radio spectrum band.

The Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development said the 3,800 megahertz band is key to 5G, which is why it will be repurposed from its previous use with satellite and wireless broadband services.

An auction for the band is planned for 2023.

An auction for another important frequency band, 3,500 megahertz, is planned for June 15.

Shaw Communications Inc. canceled this auction earlier this year before Rogers Communications Inc. plans to acquire the company.

The remaining bidders for this spectrum include Rogers, Bell, Telus, Sasktel and TekSavvy.
