NEWCASTLE fans can forget about signing superstars like Erling Haaland despite the wealth that is now flowing into their club.

This is the message from John Barnes, who urged supporters to be patient after the Saudi Arabia-led takeover of Tyneside.

New director Amanda Staveley has promised reinforcements at St James’ Park after former owner Mike Ashley sold Ashley to her mega-rich consortium for £ 300 million.

But Barnes has signaled that the new regime will seek to improve on every aspect of the roster, rather than getting a blockbuster or two.

He told BonusCodeBets: “Newcastle will not suddenly sign Erling Haaland just because they have money.

“They have to grow slowly and they will start to improve. You will not be looking at a position. If they can find better players in every single position, they will.

“That’s why the Saudi Arabian owners came. They didn’t come to buy two £ 100m worth of players and then they are expected to win the league.”

“There has to be a long-term approach to incremental improvement instead of just assuming that the best player in the world will help.

“The future looks bright for Newcastle but it will take time and they will be very careful and resist the urge to go on a shopping spree.

“In two or three years, when they have slowly improved and just kept getting better, they can start signing world-class players. That won’t happen overnight.”

Barnes spoke ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League loss to Tottenham in the first game of the new Saudi era.

The Magpies took an early lead before goals from Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min sealed the victory for the visitors.

However, the game was overshadowed by a medical emergency involving a fan suspected of having a heart attack in the stands.
