Neil Daswani, co-director of Stanford University’s Advanced Security Certification Program, has raised the alarm over a brand new scam being used by fraudsters to pursue financially vulnerable Americans.

Potential victims receive an SMS text in which their name is addressed and which contains a fake claim by a Covid-19 aid program.

The message usually contains a malicious link which then infects the device of anyone who clicks on it.

Fraud WARNING

This allows attackers to gain access to sensitive information such as bank account numbers, passwords, and credit card information.

In order not to fall victim to the fraud, Daswani urges anyone who receives suspicious-looking text not to click on a link in it – and always double-check the website’s domain names.

The incentive will always come by electronic transfer or a check in the mail, and government organizations will never text you unsolicited.

Last month, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced that Americans had lost more than $ 211 million in total to investigate fraud and coronavirus scams.

Just days after Congress passed its Covid aid bill, a new round of stimulus checks worth $ 1,400 will be sent out – and families of four will receive $ 5,600.

The exact date on which Congress will pass an auxiliary bill is not yet known. However, according to the Washington Post, White House officials are pushing for the laws to be passed before mid-March.

Aid payments are expected to be sent out within days of being signed, the news agency reports.

Checks could be coming soon, according to CNET if Congress passes the aid money on February 8 and has it entered into law on February 9.
