National Technology Day 2021 on May 11th celebrates the achievements and contributions of Indians to science and technology. This day is a reminder that India broke into the elite group of nations with nuclear weapons. On May 11, 1998, India conducted three successful nuclear tests on the Indian Army’s Pokhran test track in Rajasthan under Operation Shakti. Two more nuclear tests were carried out on May 13th. The tests were conducted by the late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam headed. National Technology Day was first celebrated on May 11, 1999.

The story of National Technology Day 2021 takes us back to 1999, when then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 a day of major successes for the country. The Technology Development Board has since honored scientists and engineers and their technological innovations who contributed to India’s growth on that day.

The nuclear tests carried out on that day in 1998, which give importance to National Technology Day 2021, were led by aerospace scientist and former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam. The mission was carried out by the Indian Army in collaboration with scientists from the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) and the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER). These tests enabled India to build thermonuclear weapons and fission bombs.
Also on National Technology Day, India’s first domestic aircraft, the Hansa-1, flew and the DRDO tested the Trishul surface-to-air missile. It is a short range missile with a quick response time.
Awards
Usually, a large-scale event is organized in New Delhi for the National Technology Day celebrations and the President is invited to be the main guest. It gives awards to scientists and honors them for their achievements. Given the raging coronavirus pandemic, it’s not clear whether a program will happen this year.
According to the Technology Development Board, the National Award for the successful commercialization of domestic technologies is given to an industrial company that successfully develops and markets a domestic technology on that day.

The board announces a topic every year. The theme of the National Technology Day 2021 is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”. In 2020, the theme was “Restarting the economy through translations of science, technology and research” entitled “RESTART”.
