The chaos on the street started when the doors of an armored truck opened on the freeway and the money blew up, as reported by Fox5.
According to reports, the armored truck driver initially attempted to collect the cash but then began recording the drivers who stopped to collect the cash.
“If you found money on the highway, it’s not your money,” said Sgt. Curtis Martin during a news conference.
“It belongs to the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) and this armored truck and the bank. It has to be returned. “
Martin added that two people were arrested on suspicion of withdrawing cash, a man and a woman.
The two adults’ car allegedly blocked traffic after they were locked out of the vehicle while trying to collect cash.
A witness to the incident, Travis Fisher told Fox5 he estimated thousands of dollars were lying on the highway.
“I see all of these things going on and I realize it’s money,” said Fisher. “It was pretty crazy. There was a sea of bills everywhere, everywhere. “
Within an hour, officers were seen blocking the highway and collecting bills to put in plastic bags.
The armored vehicle is believed to have been owned by Sectran Security Inc. and authorities are working to find out why the doors opened and the cash fell out.
Officials said social media videos of the incident could help them locate those who took cash.
Martin asked anyone who withdrew money to return it to the authorities.
“Please take it to the CHP office in Vista and we will go from there,” said Martin, adding that he could not guarantee that those who returned the money will not face any consequences.
CHP said they are working with the FBI in the ongoing investigation.
