MAC Step Bright Up (Light) Extra Dimension Skinfinish Trio ($ 39.50 for 0.31 oz.) Is a new, limited-edition trio of lighter-weight highlighters. Two out of three hues had medium buildable coverage, which lowered their ratings a bit, and most of the brand’s previous releases in this formula were fairly opaque. Otherwise, the three highlighters were evenly applied to bare skin, veneered well and held with me for eight and a half hours.

They have a gel-powder hybrid formula, which means the powders can feel almost “stiff” to those who haven’t tried this type of formula, but they work well with moderately dense, slightly rounded brushes and deliver particularly seamless powder on skin in such a way that they look almost creamy.

Lights on lavender

Lights on lavender is a pale pink-lavender with subtle, cool undertones and a luminous sheen. It had an almost opaque color coverage that was applied evenly to bare skin and blended slightly around the edges for a subtle sheen that didn’t emphasize the texture of the skin. The powder was smooth to the touch, stronger but not stiff to work with, and easy to use. It wore on well for eight and a half hours before it visibly faded.

The Extra Dimension Skinfinish formula is supposed to give the skin the perfect sheen with a “creamy powder formula” that lasts “10 hours”. It’s a powder highlighter that I would describe as a moderate to intense highlighter, and it comes in a variety of shades, some of which could work as highlighter blushes / bronzers on some skin tones and true highlighters on other skin tones. In general, the formula is very pigmented, mixable, and lasts for about eight to nine hours on me.

Freeze

Freeze is a pale, yellowish gold with moderate, warm undertones and a brilliant sheen. It had medium buildable pigmentation, although it looked a little more opaque when I was working it on my cheeks rather than my arm.

The consistency was moderately dense, smooth and firm, but not stiff, so that it could be picked up well with a moderately dense brush. The powder is applied evenly to bare skin and blends wonderfully. It lasted a good eight and a half hours before fading a little.

In the spirit

In the spirit is a medium, orange-gold with strong, warm undertones and a bright finish. The texture was a little firmer and denser, but it wasn’t stiff which ensured I had no problem picking up the product and applying it to bare skin for a seamless effect. It had medium buildable pigmentation that lasted for eight and a half hours before fading noticeably.
