MAC Spicy Pimenta Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($ 21.00 for 0.17 ounce) is a deep plum with subtle, warm undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had opaque color coverage in a single layer that was applied evenly to my lips and didn’t accentuate my lip lines.

The texture was smooth, fluid, and very spreadable until I found it necessary to remove some product from the edge of the tube before applying. It dried quickly, was reasonably flexible, and very durable as it stuck well for over eight hours and didn’t dry out over time.

Formula overview

$ 21.00 / 0.17 oz. – $ 123.53 per ounce

The formula should be “long-lasting” with “pigment-soaked, liquid paint” in a “matt-matt finish”. The brand stated it should wear “8 hours” and be “non-bouncy, non-bleeding”. Most of the nuances of the formula are opaque in a single layer, and for the most part, I felt like there was more on the applicator than was necessary for an even, opaque layer of product on my lips.

For stronger and less forgiving colors (e.g. more contrast) I sometimes found it necessary to remove something from the applicator before applying so that I didn’t get too much product around the edges. Some shades were applied smoothly and dried that way, while other shades dried and separated more noticeably along deeper lip lines so it was really color dependent.

The formula dried quickly, was a bit flexible, and easy to carry. The formula didn’t dry for the most part, with some thicker shades feeling a little drier over time. Many shades lasted six hours or more, and some definitely met the brand’s “8 hour” claim.

They had a subtle vanilla scent, but no noticeable taste.

MAC Jalea Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour ($ 21.00 for 0.17 ounces) is a darker beige with subtle, warm undertones and a flat, matte finish. It had full pigmentation in one layer of the product, but as the product dried out it tended to peel off along my deeper lip lines, if not the worst I’ve ever experienced.

The consistency was smooth, creamy and very spreadable, as it is thinner and more fluid, so I would be careful when applying it, as too much product can easily get onto the applicator at first. It has worn well for six hours and has not been dry.
