There’s no bike path further down the road, and the council says the short stretch is meant to point cyclists towards Pype Hayes Park, where a national bike route takes them on a laborious bike path to Sutton Park.
The bike path appears as you approach an intersection and then disappears before the end of the street, making cyclists and residents alike puzzling.
When asked where the cyclist should go on the arrow pointing to the left, a Twitter user said: “There is an expressway, so you can only drive on it on the left. However, there is no bike path there. “
They added the trail was “certainly a waste of time and money”.
Rick Sinclair, who owns a barber shop overlooking the alley, agreed.
He said the trail had been there for the past three years.
He added, “It’s one of those things the council brought up that no one pays attention to.
“We didn’t have any advice. I just think they must have had some spare paint!
“That’s the biggest waste of time – a white elephant.”
Kyle Dunne of neighboring Rocky Vapes, who also overlooks the trail, said, “I’ve never seen a cyclist use it. They stick to the sidewalk.
“Where the bike path drops from the curb. There are no more bike paths.
“It literally stops, completely without words. The council blocked the road twice. And each time they came out and did it again.” [the cycle lane]. “
A Birmingham City Council spokeswoman said: “This is not a bike path.
“It is just a hint to the cyclists that they should go to the sidewalk to cross the busy street.
“It’s there to get people off the pavement to the shared intersection, which then leads to Pype Hayes Park and the New Hall Valley Route.”
