Amazon founder Jeff Bezos pledged on Monday (Sept. 20) to provide $ 1 billion ($ 1.35 billion) in grants this year to focus on conservation efforts.

The pledge is part of his previously announced Bezos Earth Fund, which the Amazon founder launched last year to implement his $ 10 billion pledge to fund scientists, activists and nonprofits in the fight against climate change.

The Bezos Earth Fund announced Monday that the fund will focus on the Congo Basin in central Africa, the tropical Andean region and the tropical Pacific this year.

It is not yet known which organizations will receive the scholarships.

The grants will be prioritized in areas where local communities and indigenous peoples are the focus of conservation programs, the Bezos Earth Fund said.
