The Indian online smartphone market, once again led by Flipkart, reached its highest share of all time at 45 percent in 2020 and grew seven percent year over year in a year hit by a pandemic, according to a new report.
Flipkart remained the top online platform with a share of 48 percent, followed by Amazon with a share of 44 percent. Amazon grew 34 percent (year over year) and was the fastest growing online platform, Counterpoint Research said late Friday.
Xiaomi remained the top online brand with a 40 percent market share carried by both Redmi and Poco branded smartphones.
With 19 percent, Samsung took second place in the Indian online smartphone market with the Galaxy M series. Samsung recorded more than a third of the shipments on Amazon.
Realme was third in the online segment, also with a share of 19 percent.
According to Counterpoint, Realme remained the top smartphone brand on Flipkart in 2020, growing 27 percent from the previous year.
Vivo took fourth place due to the strong deliveries of the Y91i, Y20 and V20 series.
“OnePlus was the leading online premium smartphone brand on Amazon and ranked fifth in the entire online smartphone market,” the report said.
The five largest brands in the online market accounted for more than 82 percent of all broadcasts.
Realme and Poco were the top smartphone brands on Flipkart, recording more than 50 percent of the shipments on the platform.
The premium online smartphone market also recorded growth of 22 percent (compared to the previous year) as a result of these strategies. Apple, OnePlus and Samsung have advanced this segment and contributed to nearly 90 percent of the shipments in this segment.
“Big online brands are pursuing a hybrid channel strategy and expanding their offline stores. As smartphone brands move to an ecosystem strategy and multiple devices, the focus will be on the customer experience, which will continue to grow the offline segment.” Results showed.
Innovations like O2O (online-to-offline) and funding programs that focus on low-cost ownership and upgrades will also increase smartphone adoption in the country, the report added.
