The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) launched a telescope on the 75th day of India’s independence. The 14-inch telescope is on the Kandy campus.
It was created by Dr. BN Slesh, Prime Ministers of Padmashri and Padma Boushan, and Founding Director of Thiruvananthapuram, Institute for Space Science and Technology of India.
The telescope supports both amateur skygazers and is mainly used in training programs for outdoor and night sky observation. However, it is also powerful enough to be useful for research-level observations by astronomy researchers.

It enables the observation of deep and faint celestial bodies that could not be discovered with a small telescope. From small craters on the moon to rings of Saturn and meteor showers, this telescope uses advanced digital cameras to record these images and other astronomical events.
The project is funded by Professor BS Marty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, and by Dr. Mayukpahari headed by the Faculty of Physics.
