The competition was started in 2007 by the Thiarra family who are keen golfers and have members in both villages in Bedfordshire.

What began as a “friendly rivalry” with eight players from each village has grown and grown over the years.

The golfers have raised funds for various charities in the local community – and have chosen Sue Ryder St. John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger near Bedford for the past three years.

This was inspired by the memory of Clint Rogers, the former host of The Woolpack Pub in Wilstead, who was supported by the hospice at the end of his life.

There was a raffle with top prizes, including New Era caps, Puma and Cobra golf bags, a voucher for the Cainhoe Wood Golf Club, a Your Golf Travel gift card, and bottles of wine and whiskey. Players could also purchase a special balloon entitling them to a second chance mulligan shot.

Ellie Burke, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder St. John’s Hospicesaid:

“We sincerely thank Ranvir and the Thiarra family and everyone involved in the Houghton Wilstead Golf Cup. Your motivation to bring everyone together in the local community and give something back is really inspiring.

“The donations that you have all collected help us to continue offering our compassionate care to the local people and their families – and to fill a person’s last days with love.”
