A 49-year-old shopkeeper from Nazarene Street, Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was stabbed to death in an argument about money around 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Trevor Alfred is dead. A police statement said Alfred and the suspect, a 36-year-old bricklayer from Grove, EBD, were playing in a shop called “Rocky” on Second Street, Grove Squatting Area when they got into a heated argument The shopkeeper asked them to leave the premises.

Police said the dispute worsened with bottles being thrown outside. Alfred and the suspect then armed themselves with knives and began fighting.

During the fight, Alfred fell to the ground and was stabbed several times by the suspect, who then escaped. Alfred followed the suspect, however, and continued fighting until they both landed in a culvert.

Police said Alfred was subsequently taken to Georgetown Public Hospital and pronounced dead.

The suspect was also taken to the hospital and placed under police protection.

The investigations are ongoing.
