A TikToker went viral for revealing that their parents “taxed” their parental allowance, and parents everywhere think it’s awesome!
The video posted by Sami (@ samikaye0) was a “stab” (duet) response to the question, “What was the strangest thing your family did until you grew up and realized it was just you?”
Sami’s overwhelming response to that call has garnered over 10 million views and 12,000 comments since then – and potentially turned the allowance game on its head!
Sami explains with on-screen text in the video: “My parents taxed my housework at 25%. When I was 10, I would do 10 points a week to get $ 10. $ 2.50 of that went to family taxes and $ 2.50 went to a savings account, and then I’d keep the other 50% for expenses.
“Once family taxes were up enough, we would have a family meeting and vote on how to spend them.
“So we bought a new microwave once. My mom said ours worked fine but the other three of us thought it was slow and old so we overruled them.
“As an adult, to be honest, I’m so glad you did that. Because when I got a real job and all these taxes were deducted, I thought, what else is new? “

TikTokers were quick to share their thoughts on Sami’s tax system for children – and most of them totally agreed!
“I was mad at you until you came to the family reunion. This is really awesome and I really love the idea! ”Wrote one user.
“Your parents should definitely write a book about it!” Wrote another user.
“That’s pretty brilliant,” commented another user.
“I love this because at a young age it teaches that YOU are benefiting from your tax money and you can decide what to do with the vote,” said another user.
“Wow, this is really a really cool and healthy money management practice!” Wrote another user.
Some TikTokers brought their own unique money management experiences growing up. “Cousin was billed rent at 16, rent went up at 18. All of the money went to a savings account, and they had a down payment on a house when they moved out,” said one user.

Other TikTokers responded with humor. “You should have hit back with individual deductions and tax credits,” wrote one user.
“That’s funny, my housework allowance was also taxed [a] 100% rate, ”joked another user.
