New Delhi: Facebook has paid 17 million rubles ($ 229,643) in fines owed in Russia for failing to delete content Moscow considers illegal, Interfax news agency reported on Sunday, but with the Threat of a possibly higher fine.
Facebook mother Meta, along with Alphabets Google, faces a lawsuit next week for alleged repeated violations of Russian content legislation and could face a fine equal to a percentage of their annual sales in Russia.
Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Sunday.
Russia sent state bailiffs in October to enforce the collection of 17 million rubles in fines against Facebook. Citing the database of the Federal Court of Justice, Interfax announced that there were no more enforcement proceedings against the company as of Sunday.
Moscow this year increased pressure on big tech companies in a campaign that critics characterize as an attempt by the Russian authorities to control the Internet more, which they believe threatens to stifle the freedom of individuals and companies.
