“We purify it to meet federal and state standards and then go a little further to make sure we have good quality water,” Brown said. The city of Yakima and the surrounding areas get their water from the Naches water treatment plant, which takes water from the Naches River and filters it before use.

And drinking more tap water will help reduce plastic waste in landfills. The water is tested for chlorine and arsenic every day, Brown said. He said that if these levels become unsafe, he will inform the city immediately.

Brown said they are adding fluoride to the water, which helps prevent tooth decay, for more health benefits. He said they go above and beyond requirements to ensure safety. Naches water treatment plant will test their water for lead and copper later this summer, but Brown said he is not worried.

The state has more than 900 water treatment facilities that meet all state and federal requirements for healthy drinking water. “It’s really good for the environment, and we all like a nice, clean, comfortable environment,” said Brown.
