A CAMPAIGN to recycle a million pairs of soccer shoes that would otherwise be thrown away is supported by former England goalkeeper David James.
The “Donate and Demand” campaign enables anyone with replacement shoes for soccer or astro turf to request a free “boot bag” for the donation.

After that, their boots can be picked up at any of the many claim stations that can be found in parks, training fields and some of the UK’s biggest football clubs.
Hopefully, with the Football Rebooted drive, families can save money on new boots and save 136,000 tons of carbon – just like 7,000 cars taken off the road for a year.
David James MBE, who works with utility company Utilita, said, “Right now there are millions of pairs of soccer shoes that people have outgrown or replaced and we need to make sure they don’t end up in a landfill.
“Repeating these boots through Utilita’s Football Rebooted campaign will not only save players a few pounds, but will also be an important reminder of the power of upcycling and reusing items that still have life in them.”
Premium pairs of the most wanted retro boots as well as past and current player boots and other items will also be included in the mix – so anyone can come along and grab a pair to be proud of.
Premier League and EFL clubs across the UK, including Portsmouth, Southampton, Derby County and Leeds United, have already committed to donating boots worn by their Academy players, while first-team players have also donated their own boots in the interests of the environment .
Under the new campaign, schools can request that they be sent boots for children who they find need football boots so they can play in or out of school.
The campaign comes after it was found, according to the Utilitas State of Play report, that of the 74 percent of families financially affected by the pandemic, 18 percent cannot send their children back to grassroots football because they cannot afford boots and other items such as goalkeeper gloves and shin guards.

During the pandemic, 63 percent of parents surveyed through OnePoll said they had been asked for financial support by their child’s club.
Unfortunately, only three percent of parents said they knew about significant amounts.
Bill Bullen, founder of Utilita – the only energy company created to help households use and waste less energy – said: “Most consumers are increasingly thinking about how their choices affect the environment, but sometimes life hinders the right choice.
“That’s why we developed Football Rebooted, which makes recycling football boots with a lot of life very easy.
“The campaign was shaped by football players, coaches and parents on the grassroots. Hence, examples of carbon savings that really appeal to this audience are used – energy consumption at home and cars driving off the road.
“It was incredibly encouraging to see soccer players speak passionately about the importance of protecting the environment by the age of six.”
