New Delhi: Total store closures, data theft, phishing and even the fear of ransomware are all part of today’s reality when going online. Cybercrime costs businesses a lot of money every day, so businesses need to take steps to protect their business, their employees, and the public they serve.

The work is difficult, but not insurmountable. However, thieves ultimately target those with the weakest protection, and businesses need to address this issue quickly. According to Microsoft Security, employee training is the most important phase. Here are five suggestions on how you can do this.

1. Training

Employees should be trained to send and receive email securely, as well as to recognize and protect themselves from phishing attacks and malware. They should be made aware that there are potential threats online and that they need to protect personal and organizational information to prevent damage from cyberattacks. Ideally, they should go through a program in which they are coached by a cyber attack, similar to a phishing simulation.

2. Multi-factor authentication

Employees should have access to passwordless authentication methods whenever possible. Multi-factor authentication should be used. The organization should also have the latest versions of browsers and operating systems. Make it a habit for employees to check website certificates to make sure the website they are visiting is legitimate. You can do this by looking for the lock icon next to the URL on the far left of the browser and clicking on it.

3. Secure connections

Employees need to be taught the value of using secure connections like HTTPS. This is achieved by installing the HTTPS Everywhere plug-in for your browser. This makes surfing safer.

4. Enable pop-up blockers

Install browser and operating system updates as soon as they are available to ensure the latest security standards. Delays can put business or personal information at risk.

5. Cloud-based antivirus solutions

Antivirus solutions and cloud protection work together to provide accurate real-time security. This will help to further reduce the dangers.
