Big Apple

ColourPop Big Apple Glossy Lip Stain ($ 8.00 for 0.21 oz.) Is a bright coral red with warm undertones and a glossy finish. As marketed, it had medium buildable pigmentation that applied evenly and smoothly to my lips. The texture was light, spreadable and not so watery that it was too thin or prone to streaks.

This shade turned my lips a warm red underneath, which was visible after four and a half hours of wear. The stain persisted for a few hours and didn’t feel to the touch over time.

Formula overview

It is said to have the “long-lasting power of a lip stain” with the “shine of a gloss”, paired with a “medium to buildable coverage” that “does not dry”. The initial texture was almost watery, overly spreadable (and the applicator often picked up more product than needed, so be careful when applying), but dried to a more silky sheen that was less glossy and more like a satined lipstick with some translucence was.

The initial shine wore off within two hours, making it look like a real satin finish – this went for doing nothing or just a glass as it wasn’t transferable. The stain did not get through a meal and tended to leave a very thick ring around the edges of my lips because it wore off so quickly when I ate. Left to their own devices, most sunglasses were worn for about six hours, leaving a faint mark.

It had medium buildable coverage but quickly built up to semi-opaque coverage without an official second coat (just go back and forth to get an even layer of product). A few shades were more true to color to medium and others were more semi-opaque from the first layer on.

There did not seem to be any added fragrance or flavor to wear.

Berry ripe

ColourPop Berry Ripe Glossy Lip Stain ($ 8.00 for 0.21 oz.) Is a rich, medium-dark berry with cool undertones and a soft, glossy sheen. It had a semi-opaque, buildable color release that applied evenly and smoothly to my lips. This was one of the most impressive nuances in the range as it actually made my lips appear smoother and more voluminous.

The consistency was light, spreadable and easy to work with, although the applicator tends to pick up excess product. It lasted a good six hours and left a heavy stain that was left a little over a meal.

Everything fruity

ColourPop Tutti Fruity Glossy Lip Stain ($ 8.00 for 0.21 oz.) Is a lighter, flushed burgundy with cool undertones and a glossy, cream-colored finish. It had medium coverage that was a bit buildable, but the product tended to settle and darken in my lip lines, making this shade difficult to apply evenly.

The consistency was also thinner and more watery compared to other colors. It lasted well for six hours, leaving a fair stain, but the stain didn’t last that long through a meal. The formula didn’t dry out over time.

I’ve been lucky enough to put on a really thin, sheer layer, then blot it off and wear it that way as it prevented most of the darkening in my lip lines.
