BEIJING (AP) – Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Tuesday attacked calls by some in the US and its allies to limit their dependence on Chinese suppliers and block technology exchanges.
Speaking to representatives of left political parties in more than 100 countries, Xi said China’s ruling Communist Party had managed to lift the country out of poverty and create a new model of development.
Such experiences should be shared, and no country should “hinder the development of other countries and harm the lives of their people through political manipulation,” Xi said.
“Together we must oppose everyone who is involved in technological blockades, technological divisions and decoupling of development,” said Xi.
Decoupling has become synonymous in the US and elsewhere with ending reliance on Chinese utility lines, especially for high-tech products like smartphones and computers.
Xi’s speech, broadcast live on the Internet, comes days after delivering a defiant speech on the Communist Party’s centenary, saying that China will not be harassed and will punish anyone who tries.
According to analysts, Xi tends to change his tone depending on whether he is speaking in front of a national or international audience.
“Xi is a risk taker, but he’s not reckless,” said Steve Tsang, director of the China Institute at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
