Chanel Rouge Feu (57) Rouge Allure Velvet ($ 38.00 for 0.12 oz.) Is a lighter, medium-dark orange with moderate, warm (more reddish) undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had an almost opaque color coverage that stuck evenly to my lips and didn’t tend to cling to my natural lip texture, although it wasn’t as flattering as some of the best colors in the formula.

The consistency felt smooth, light, and not slippery – it slipped on easily, but didn’t have the “wet” feel that conventional lipsticks had, making it look and feel more velvety. It carried well for five hours and felt slightly moisturizing when worn.

The Rouge Allure Velvet formula is said to be a “non-drying matte lipstick” with an “intensely rich, long-lasting color” and a “velvet matte finish”. Over time, I’ve felt that the formula has improved and actually doesn’t dry (the original launch didn’t wear out well on me) to lightly dry (more in colors that lasted six to eight hours). The pigmentation varies from shade to shade, but is usually semi-opaque to opaque with a semi-matte to satin finish. The texture had a velvety glide that doesn’t feel particularly creamy or wet, but the lipstick is comfortable to wear over the four to six hours it typically lasts. Like most Chanel lip products, they have a rosy smell but no discernible taste.

Chanel Rouge Vie (58) Rouge Allure Velvet ($ 38.00 for 0.12 oz.) Is a medium black plum with moderate, warm undertones and a satin finish. It had rich pigmentation in a single stroke that had a smooth, velvety-creamy feel that wasn’t too slippery, but not too silicone-heavy to the touch.

The latter was why I felt it was better applied and more forgiving of lip texture / lip lines. The color lasted a good five and a half hours and felt slightly moisturizing over time.
