RALEIGH – Laurinburg-Maxton Airport has been approved by the NC Board of Transportation for a grant of 200,000.
In total, more than $ 29.2 million was awarded at 13 airports across the state. Funds awarded require a 10% local agreement.
The Laurinburg-Maxton Airport grant will help replace the underground fuel facility with an above-ground filling station as the existing fuel farm has reached the end of its useful life.
“The current gas station is aging and has been at the airport for as long as the staff can remember, so probably since the 1960s,” said Seth Hatchell, deputy director of Laurinburg-Maxton Airport. “For years the airport has joined the state’s fight to get all underground fuel farms over the earth by 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic has hampered that goal.
According to Hatchell, the grant funds will be used for the design phase, which will determine the best location for the fuel farm and identify potential or existing environmental hazards.
“Once this is complete, the airport will apply for additional grants for the construction phase of the project,” said Hatchell.
WK Dickson has received the design contract.
“The Southeast Regional Airport Authority will add 10% of the funding,” said Hatchell.
