The White House has partnered with popular online dating platforms like Match, Tinder, and Bumble to encourage more Americans to get vaccinated against the virus, which has killed hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone.
With restrictions easing across the country as coronavirus cases, hospital stays and deaths decrease, people are increasingly returning to some semblance of normalcy in their lives, including dating.
President Joe Biden’s administration has set a goal of delivering at least one vaccine to at least 70% of adults in the United States by Independence Day on July 4th. The partnership with dating sites is designed to attract young people who are otherwise reluctant to be vaccinated.
“Social distancing and dating have always been a challenging combination,” White House coronavirus advisor Andy Slavitt told reporters on Friday.
He said OkCupid, one of the dating sites, reported that people who view their vaccination status were 14 percent more likely to get a match.
“We finally found one thing that makes us all more attractive: a vaccination,” said Slavitt.
The dating platforms, which cater to more than 50 million people in the US, offer badges with vaccination status, free access to “premium content like boosts, super-likes and super-swipes” for vaccinated individuals, and filters for potential hooks. Match Group Inc confirmed the participation of its top US brands including Tinder, Match, OkCupid, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, BLK and Chispa. Advertising campaigns will be launched in the coming weeks and will run until July 4th.
