Americans who had overpaid unemployment benefits during the pandemic last year may have to repay it now.
A “small portion” of New Yorkers received double payments as staff rushed to ship them out as quickly as possible, the New York State Department of Labor said.

But now, those who received excess money in April and May 2020 will have to return the extra money as “Federal NYS DOL law is required to get back overpaid funds,” the department tweeted last week.
The number of people who could potentially be left out of their pockets wasn’t immediately clear, but a Labor Department spokesman confirmed the overpayment was part of the government’s additional $ 600 handout given earlier last year.
Roughly 40 million Americans received unemployment benefits last year, a package backed by Covid relief laws and executive orders.
Those affected will be notified by letter. This also contains instructions on how an appeal or a waiver of the allocation of the balance can be applied for by the authorities.
In April and May 2020, a small fraction of applicants received double payments as NYS DOL worked to get New Yorkers their benefits as soon as possible.
Under federal law, NYS DOL is required to reclaim overpaid funds.

The department can also email some people a waiver form to virtually sign – or anyone who is overpaid can request a waiver form on Friday after 12:00 p.m.
Although there is no deadline to apply for exemption, the Ministry of Labor said those who have not filed within 30 days of the date stated in the correspondence will reduce their benefits.
They’ll drop 20 percent by the time the repayment is complete, but it won’t start until a decision has been made on your case, the department said.
Due to the fact that many Americans who lost their jobs last year had never received benefits and the State Department staff were overflowing with inquiries, some people received payments for which they were not entitled.
The news comes as a fourth stimulus check of $ 1,400 is due as Democrats have demanded that President Joe Biden continue to support struggling citizens until the pandemic is over.
The president is urged to include more Covid relief in the $ 2.3 trillion infrastructure plan he is now formulating.

About 20 US Democratic Senators, including Treasury Committee Chairman Ron Wyden of Oregon and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, have sent a letter urging Biden to add new bailouts to his Build Back Better infrastructure package.
The senators wrote, “Families shouldn’t have to worry about having enough money to pay for bare minimums in the coming months as the country continues to battle a global pandemic.”
A new analysis of census data from the nonprofit Economic Security Project (ESP) shows that most people used their last $ 1,400 checks to pay for essentials including groceries and bills.
