It’s the best time of the year … when we take a look at what was and what will be. Top trends have been at the forefront of the headlines, from accelerating digital transformation and rapidly adopting 5G and cloud technologies to the persistent threat of cybersecurity breaches and the increasing sophistication of cyber criminals. From predictions about the top technologies for transformation in 2022 to when we can expect our self-driving cars to hit the market, we’ve heard it all.
The top telecommunications industry news of the month are summarized below. For all the breaking news, visit Pipeline’s News Center or subscribe to our roundup of telecommunications industry news.
In a world that is driven by rapid digital change, what will be the most important technologies in 2022? Artificial intelligence and machine learning, cloud computing and 5G top the list, according to a new IEEE survey of global technology leaders from the US, UK, China, India and Brazil. And 95 percent of respondents agree that AI has the potential to drive the most transformative changes in the next decade. Other trends that are gaining momentum are robots, connected devices and security technologies. IDC shared its own predictions for the future of digital innovation, revealing 10 key ways software innovation is transforming business now and over the next decade. In a supplementary list, IDC also revealed 10 predictions for digital infrastructure transformation based on resilience and trust.
Looking ahead continued to be a major driver of the top trending news as Mobileum announced new research showing that 56 percent of operators placed improving the customer experience as their top priority in 2022, followed by ensuring a high-performing and reliable Network to mitigate security and risk threats and reduce costs.
Looking to the year 2022, we see that 5G will continue to be an important factor for transformation and business success in all industries. A new analysis from Frost & Sullivan concludes that 5G will enable change across APAC, with particularly significant growth opportunities and revenue increases for operators. With 5G gradually rolling out across the region and backed by government initiatives, market revenue is expected to grow from $ 2.13 billion in 2020 to $ 13.90 billion in 2025, with an average annual growth rate of 45.5 percent.
Looking to advance in other parts of the world, five of Europe’s leading telecommunications companies collaborated on a report based on the findings of Analysys Mason. Together, they call on policymakers, EU Member States and industry players to work together and give urgent priority to building an Open Radio Access Network ecosystem to ensure that Europe continues to play a leadership role in both 5G and 6G.
While 5G still has a lot of innovation ahead of it, many projects identified as “Next G” and “6G” are already underway around the world, with a significant leadership coming from America. 5G Americas detailed what to expect if wireless communications for consumers and businesses evolved beyond what we know today as 5G. The year ahead certainly seems to be a key year for wireless connectivity innovation as the adoption of Wi-Fi 6, 6E and Ultra-Wideband accelerates in a growing number of end markets.
To conclude that solid round of insights and predictions, Rackspace announced the results of a new global survey conducted on Google Cloud that highlighted the accelerating pace of cloud adoption. According to the survey, the question is no longer whether companies should migrate to the cloud, but how they can use the cloud for innovation, efficiency and growth.
