Custom pendant + wedding set

The birthstones in December include tanzanite, turquoise and zircon – a very blue-dominated selection of gemstones! Tanzanite is an interesting gemstone because it’s known for its deep, saturated blues to purple tones that can come about naturally or by heating a gemstone, and unheated tanzanite stones can run cloudy green-brown to warmer purple.

Mellan was a December baby (actually born on Christmas Eve) and after he died I decided to include his birthstone – tanzanite – in a pendant that I was already planning to make (using my previous engagement ring diamond). I wanted a crescent moon with a mix of sapphires offset and subtly connected to create the illusion of stars in the sky.

The image pictured shows the finished piece, and the tanzanite stone is the largest, more oval-shaped gem, flashing blue-violet and lit by a diamond band (to represent Mellan in the stars now). The other colored gemstones are all in different shades of sapphire to complement my updated wedding ring set (made from sapphire, which is my birthstone and one of the first gifts my husband and boyfriend at the time gave me was a sapphire bracelet).

Both pieces were designed in collaboration with Lauryn Volovar of Earth’s Treasury and both were excellent experiences (in case there is any confusion this is not sponsored and both pieces of jewelry were paid for by me). I know the last time I mentioned the trailer some readers asked for more information, so … here it goes

About this series

Each look idea revolves around a “quad” of four nuances with the expectation that, depending on the skin tone, one could bring in the right browbone or additional transitional nuances. Think of these ideas as a stepping stone with four “core” colors that can inspire your next look. For reference, based on how I normally apply makeup, I would consider applying the colors in this order: inner lid, center of the lid, outer lid / crease and crease / above the crease or lid.
