New Delhi: In India, the most popular password is “password” and not “123456” as has been widely speculated. Interestingly, Japan is the only other country that had the same top password as India, new research revealed on Thursday.
Other common passwords used in India include “iloveyou”, “krishna”, “sairam” and “omsairam”. Predictable number and keypad sequences are particularly popular in India, according to a new study by NordPass, a proprietary password manager.
“Passwords like 12345 and variations of qwerty were high on the lists. These combinations are also very popular worldwide, as are localized versions of qwerty (e.g.
Names and loving words were very popular with both men and women in India. Some other common passwords in India are 123456789, 12345678, india123, qwerty, abc123, xxx, Indya123, 1qaz @ WSX, 123123, abcd1234, and 1qaz.
Overall, the Indian password list shows trends similar to many countries, but also has its differences. India is one of the few countries that has a different password number one – “password”, while 43 of 50 countries analyzed had “123456” as password number one.
“Qwerty” and its variations are particularly popular in India.
“In addition, other combinations of letters formed by pressing the keyboard in a vertical or horizontal order are very popular,” the study found.
Names are also very popular with men and women, for example “priyanka”, “sanjay”, “rakesh” and others.
Loving words in English are also quite common, especially among women, for example “iloveyou”, “sweetheart”, “lovely”, “sunshine” and more.
The research also showed how weak the top passwords are and how long it would take the hacker to crack this password.
“In total, 62 out of 200 passwords in India can be cracked in less than a second. That’s 31 percent, compared to 84.5 percent worldwide.
“Unfortunately, the passwords are getting weaker and weaker and people are still not paying attention to the correct password hygiene,” says Jonas Karklys, CEO of NordPass.
“It is important to understand that passwords are the gateway to our digital lives, and as we spend more and more time online, it becomes extremely important to take better care of our cybersecurity,” added Karklys.
When you have found your password in the list, change it to a unique and secure password.
Ideally, use a password generator online or in your password manager app to create a really complex password.
“Today the average person has around 100 accounts, so it would be impossible to remember all of their passwords when they are truly unique and complex. Password managers are a great solution to this,” the study found. Also Read: Apple Fixes Call Abort Issues On iPhone 12, iPhone 13 With iOS 15.1.1 Update
