GARETH SOUTHGATE is offered double £ 6 million a year salary to renew his contract in England.

The Three Lions chief will lead the country at next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

But the FA fears it won’t strike a more extensive deal as it might consider returning to the Premier League.

Full talks are set to begin after the last two World Cup qualifiers, tonight at home in Albania, followed by a trip to San Marino on Monday.

FA boss Mark Bullingham announced during the European Championship that he would like to extend Southgate.

However, the 51-year-old has insisted he won’t discuss the offer until England qualifies.

The FA would be interested in another UK manager if Southgate leaves – and Brighton’s Graham Potter is the obvious choice.

English skipper Harry Kane said: “I would love it if he stayed. But it will depend on him and the FA and his personal choice. We’ll see how to do that.

“He was great and his record speaks for itself.

“Semi-finals at the World Cup, final at the European Championships – we’re going in the right direction.”

After starting out on a salary of around £ 1.8m, Southgate received a raise to £ 3m per season after leading England to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia.

He took a one-time £ 1 million pay cut last year due to the pandemic when the FA was desperate to cut costs.

Previously, Fabio Capello was England’s top earning boss at £ 6m a year.

Southgate is keen to test himself in Premier League management – 12 years after being fired from his only club job in Middlesbrough.

His advisors are now trying to persuade him to sign the FA’s contract, which would tie him to the job in Germany until 2024 euros.

But Southgate will be in office for six years until the World Cup – and may not want to commit.

Southgate was asked yesterday if the lack of English coaches made him indispensable.

He said, “One thing is for sure, I will never be indispensable! We want five or six English managers who could have this job in the future. “
