While barter is no longer common around the world, Toyota has brought the system back to Brazil for those who want to pay with anything other than cash or cards. Automakers have introduced a new scheme called “Toyota Barter”. This scheme allows buyers to take their new Toyota SUV or pickup truck home by swapping out soy or corn.
The Japanese brand announced this alternative payment solution in Brazil on August 4th. It was introduced to attract more agribusiness customers to Toyota Fold. There you can replace your soy or corn products with the new Toyota Hilux Pickup Truck, Toyota Fortuner or Toyota Corolla Cross SUV.

Corn and soybeans are swapped at market prices (based on the weight of the products). Toyota will conduct a thorough study of the rural production of these crops to ensure sustainable plantations and a certain level of quality. The agricultural sector in Brazil accounts for 16% of Toyota’s direct sales.
“Toyota Barter was the first sales channel in Brazil to accept grain for car purchases since it started as a pilot in 2019. Now it has made the facility official for the agribusiness and has helped expand Toyota’s presence. “We have the opportunity to do so for one of our most important industries,” said Hosel Islincon Bruno, Direct Sales Manager for Toyota Brazil.

New retail models were initially deployed in Bahia, Matt Grosso, Goias, Minas Gerais, Piauí and Tocantins in Brazil. Buyers in countries such as Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grossodosul should also benefit from this regulation in the future.
Although such a payment system is unlikely to be introduced in India, Toyota is currently preparing to launch a version of the Martis Suzuki Ciaz (which will appear as the Toyota Belta) and a version of the Martis Suzuki Ertiga. Toyota also plans to launch the Toyota Hilux pickup in India in the coming months.
