FOOD prices are rising again

If you’ve been over your grocery budget lately, it’s time to hit reset.

Here are some ways to cut the cost of your grubPhoto credit: Getty

Here I offer a few ways to reduce the cost of your grub.

SAVINGS ON YELLOW STICKER: In this supermarket section you will find discounts of up to 75 percent on groceries that are close to their use-by date

When the discounts are made varies by store, but larger savings are usually made in the evening – good for finding a cheap dinner.

You can find freezing items that you can thaw and eat at will.

Herbs can be frozen in ice cube trays and I love finding vegetables, roasting them that day, and serving them with meals throughout the week.

YUMMY: Don’t overlook the deli counter as the discounts at the end of the day can be great.

With fish in particular, there are usually strong discounts and you tend to get better quality and more, since whole fish are cheaper.

Those who cannot afford take-away meals will often find inexpensive ready-made meals from the “cook-in-store” here.

Morrisons has a great pizza counter that you can pick up Domino’s pizza dupes for as little as £ 3, and currently the mini pizzas are only 49p compared to 65p.

WORLD’S BEST: In general, you will find far fewer sauces, canned, rice, herbs, and spices in the World Foods section than in the main courses.

I grab lentils to stock up on stews and Bolognese, as well as bags of crispy snacks.

For example, 50g of chili powder on the spice rack at Tesco costs 95 pence, but a 400g bag of Rajah chili powder costs £ 1.49 in the World Food Gang.

MILK DISCOUNTS: Always buy the largest block of cheese you can afford and grating and freezing it will take you a lot further.

Also, beat air in butter so it doubles, then keep in the refrigerator – this really helps the serving stretch.

When it comes to yogurt, sometimes bigger is not better. For example, 1kg of Fage Total Greek Yogurt at Asda costs £ 4.50, but the 500g pot is currently £ 1.95 so two would be £ 3.90 which is a savings of 60p.

BAKE MONEY: Nuts and dried fruits can be cheaper in the baking aisle than in the snack aisle, where VAT is incurred.

Unsalted peanuts cost around 80 pence for 100 g in the baking aisle, but up to £ 1 per 100 g in the snack aisle.
