The colors of opals + tourmalines: 10 eye shadow color combinations for October

October has two birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Opals are known for their play of colors, which creates a color palette in a pattern that contrasts with the opal’s background color. They often look almost like an iridescent rainbow; There are many types of opal, but the most popular types are white opals, black opals, fire opals, boulder opals, and crystal opals.

Tourmalines encompass a multitude of types, so the color really depends on the type of tourmaline, as the tourmaline color palette is huge – from pink to bright yellow to magenta and blue to black. There are even two- and three-colored tourmaline stones.

I’ve focused my opal-inspired choices on duochrome and multichrome, while I prefer pink / red for tourmaline (one of the most popular to buy) and aqua / teal (a popular alternative to pink / red). I used some of the other shades tourmalines can have as accent colors.

About this series

Each look idea revolves around a “quad” of four shades with the expectation that, depending on the skin tone, one could bring in the right browbone or an additional transition color. Think of these ideas as a stepping stone with four “core” colors that can inspire your next look. For reference, based on how I normally apply makeup, I would consider applying the colors in this order: inner lid, center of lid, outer lid / crease and crease / above crease or lid.

October is 9.0 for Opal & Tourmaline
